Songtekst van Nick Cave: As I Sat Sadly By Her Side

As I Sat Sadly By Her Side

As I sat sadly by her side
At the window, through the glass
She stroked a kitten in her lap
And we watched the world as it fell past
Softly she spoke these words to me
And with brand new eyes, open wide
We pressed our faces to the glass
As I sat sadly by her side

She said, "Father, mother, sister, brother,
Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece,
Soldier, sailor, physician, labourer,
Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest
Earth and moon and sun and stars
Planets and comets with tails blazing
All are there forever falling
Falling lovely and amazing"

Then she smiled and turned to me
And waited for me to reply
Her hair was falling down her shoulders
As I sat sadly by her side

As I sat sadly by her side
The kitten she did gently pass
Over to me and again we pressed
Our different faces to the glass
"That may be very well", I said
"But watch the one falling in the street
See him gesture to his neighbours
See him trampled beneath their feet
All outward motion connects to nothing
For each is concerned with their immediate need
Witness the man reaching up from the gutter
See the other one stumbling on who can not see"

With trembling hand I turned toward her
And pushed the hair out of her eyes
The kitten jumped back to her lap
As I sat sadly by her side

Then she drew the curtains down
And said, "When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers

And God does not care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over-inflated"

At which she turned her head away
Great tears leaping from her eyes
I could not wipe the smile from my face
As I sat sadly by her side

In my mind's eye I see this song as the story of a lover sitting by his sick or dying sweetheart on a bed in a hospital room. The immense pain of treatment is, of course, saddening the lover. But, his sweetheart is determined to remain positive and perhaps her difficult experience has helped her to understand how delicate and amazing life truly is. In awe, she admires the diversity of the world and the beauty that everything will "forever" fall (die and be reborn), something "lovely and amazing". The kitten is reprentative of their intimacy, in the physical anatomical sense and in the psychological sense; that the kitten is like a delicate baby cat that needs protection. She smiles and the kitten is passed to the lover and it's his turn to become vulnerable. "That may be very well", the lover replies- pessimistically: "But watch" that person "falling in the street (below the window)". "See him gesture (for help) to his neighbours" and watch them ignore the gesture and "him trapled beneath their feet". "All outward motion connects to nothing for each is concerned with their immediant need". He comments about how something horrible can happen, like his sweetheart can become in pain and sick and die, but the rest of the world will carry on, ignoring her struggle as though nothing has happened. The world is unfair. "Witness the (homeless) man reaching up from the gutter, see the other (blind) one stumbling on that cannot see" the guesture because he's physically disabled. "Then she drew the curtains down And said, "When will you ever learn That what happens there beyond the glass Is simply none of your concern? God has given you but one heart You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers And God does not care for your benevolence Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others Nor does he care for you to sit At windows in judgement of the world He created While sorrows pile up around you Ugly, useless and over-inflated" In otherwords the sweetheart tells her lover to live his life without becoming bitter and upset about other people over judgements he has made about cruelty in other people's lives. It's ugly and useless and being cruel to himself! She turns her head away to cry with emotion. He can't stop smiling, because he doesn't want to upset her like before and for her to know how much pain her pain is causing him. So; although, smiling he continues to sit sadly by her side. Whenever I listen to this song it reminds me of a sick friend and my Grandpa who were intensely sick and in much pain, but so positive and amazing individuals, determined to enjoy the life around them despite the agony caused by it.
